Haonan HE is a visual artist, choreographer and poet, born and raised in Yunnan Province, China, lives and works between Paris and Toulouse, France. He graduated from the Master ArTeC (Arts, Technologies, Digitization et Creation) at EUR ArTec Paris In 2022. He continued his research in Post-diplome Art at École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Lyon In 2023.
Through the intersection of cartography, instrument making, choreography, and digital technologies, Haonan He develops an extra-disciplinary, multimedia practice nourished by investigative-creation, cybernetic critiques of psychotropic drugs, and techno-shamanistic research. his research traces the colonial trajectory of opium poppy dissemination, spanning from the 11th century to contemporary times, laying bare the colonial underpinnings of opium-derived drug issues (including opium, morphine, and heroin), and the intricate contemporary dilemmas they present. For the artist, colonial subjugation, technological acceleration in the drug industry and ecological shamanism are inextricably entangled. This exploration reveals a biochemical mechanism of automatic exploitation established by colonialism through early extraction technology prototypes. With the advent of the digital era in the 20th century, this mechanism was modernized with information technology and digital platforms, fostering a reliance on addiction-based neural networks of extractivism. Consequently, land, flora, and the human body became extraction units entwined with drug production. As a counterpoint, he embark on a hybrid media art experiment, marrying digital and material, aimed at uncovering the biochemical transformations induced by psychotropic drugs, with the intent of eliciting, visualizing, characterizing, and predicting these phenomena.
His work has been exhibited at the Yunnan Art Museum in China (2016), the Chengdu Biennale (2021), The Edinburgh International Poetry Festival (2022), Fotogenia international Film poetry Festival (2022), Les laboratoires d’Aubervilliers in paris (2023), The Youmein Festival in Tangier (2023), the MAC Lyon (2023) and Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris（2024） He participated in the intercultural program Culture d'avenir 2022-2023, organized by Centre Pompidou in Paris, CCCB in Barcelona, and HKW in Berlin.He has participated in the In situ residency program organized by the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris and the Daniel and Nina Carraso Foundation. He was recently selected for Fellowship to WHW Akademija 2024.

Haonan HE est un artiste visuel, chorégraphe et poète, né et élevé dans la province du Yunnan, en Chine, qui vit et travaille entre Paris et Toulouse, en France. Il est diplômé du Master ArTeC (Arts, Technologies, Numérique et Création) de l'EUR ArTec Paris en 2022. Il poursuit ses recherches en Art Post-diplome à l'École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Lyon En 2023.
À travers l'intersection de la cartographie, de la fabrication d'instruments, de la chorégraphie et des technologies numériques, Haonan He développe une pratique extra-disciplinaire et multimédianourrie par l'investigation-création, les critiques cybernétiques des drogues psychotropes et la recherche techno-chamanique. Sa recherche retrace l'histoire coloniale de la diffusion mondiale du pavot à opium du XIe siècle à nos jours pour éclairer les racines coloniales du problème des drogues issues du pavot et les dilemmes complexes qu'il pose aujourd'hui. Pour l’artiste, l’assujettissement colonial, l'accélération technologique dans l'industrie de la drogue et le chamanisme écologique sont inextricablement enchevêtrés. Cette exploration révèle un mécanisme biochimique d'exploitation automatique établi par le colonialisme à travers les premiers prototypes de technologie d'extraction.
