Opium-Arium unfolds as a field of ceramic poppies representing different stages in the plant’s growth cycle. Emerging from soil and traversed by smoke and a scent evoking opium, the installation places the poppy at the center of intertwined histories of medicine, drug economies, colonialism, dependency, and extraction. Rather than reproducing the botanical smell of the poppy itself, the olfactory composition evokes opium and its inhalation through historical representations, vegetal notes, and traces of smoke.
The project was awarded the second Prix Flair for olfactory art in 2024. Its olfactory dimension was developed in collaboration with perfumer Margaux Le Paih-Guérin at Studio Flair, with curatorial accompaniment by art historian and curator Sandra Barré. First developed and presented at POUSH in 2024, the project established a protocol bringing together ceramic sculpture, scent, smoke, archival imagery, and sound.
For the 18th Lyon Biennale of Contemporary Art, Passer d’un rêve à l’autre / To pass from one dream to another, in 2026, Opium-Arium was reactivated and entirely reconfigured for the space of the Institut d’art contemporain, Villeurbanne. Nearly doubled in scale, the ceramic field became an immersive environment in which the viewer no longer simply stands before the work but is physically surrounded by its landscape, scent, and smoke.

Opium-Arium se déploie comme un champ de pavots en céramique représentant différents stades du cycle de croissance de la plante. Émergeant de la terre et traversée par la fumée ainsi que par une odeur évoquant l’opium, l’installation replace le pavot au centre d’histoires entremêlées liées à la médecine, aux économies de la drogue, au colonialisme, à la dépendance et à l’extraction. Plutôt que de reproduire l’odeur botanique du pavot lui-même, la composition olfactive évoque l’opium et son inhalation à travers des représentations historiques, des notes végétales et des traces de fumée.
Le projet a reçu le deuxième Prix Flair consacré à l’art olfactif en 2024. Sa dimension olfactive a été développée en collaboration avec la parfumeuse Margaux Le Paih-Guérin au sein du Studio Flair, avec l’accompagnement curatorial de l’historienne de l’art et commissaire Sandra Barré. Développé et présenté pour la première fois à POUSH en 2024, le projet a établi un protocole réunissant sculpture en céramique, odeur, fumée, images d’archives et son.
Pour la 18e Biennale d’art contemporain de Lyon, Passer d’un rêve à l’autre / To pass from one dream to another, en 2026, Opium-Arium a été réactivé et entièrement reconfiguré pour l’espace de l’Institut d’art contemporain, Villeurbanne. Presque doublé d’échelle, le champ de céramiques est devenu un environnement immersif dans lequel le public ne se tient plus simplement face à l’œuvre, mais se trouve physiquement enveloppé par son paysage, son odeur et sa fumée.
Opium-Arium 展开为一片由陶瓷罂粟构成的田野，呈现植物生长周期中的不同阶段。罂粟从土壤中生长出来，烟雾与一种唤起鸦片气味的嗅觉成分穿行其间，使罂粟重新成为一个交织着医学、毒品经济、殖民主义、依赖与提取机制等历史问题的核心。嗅觉创作并不试图再现罂粟植物本身的气味，而是通过历史图像与叙事、植物性气息以及烟雾的痕迹，唤起鸦片及其吸食经验。
该项目于 2024 年获得第二届 Prix Flair 嗅觉艺术奖。作品的嗅觉部分与 Studio Flair 的调香师 Margaux Le Paih-Guérin 合作开发，并由艺术史学者及策展人 Sandra Barré 提供策展陪伴。项目于 2024 年首次在 POUSH 发展并展出，由此形成了一套将陶瓷雕塑、气味、烟雾、档案图像与声音结合起来的创作协议。
