Waft is an installation composed of an early stereoscopic photograph, modified in black and white, and seven ceramic elements. The work takes as its starting point a stereograph attributed to Herbert G. Ponting and published by H.C. White Co. around 1902–1907, depicting children working in an opium poppy field in Manchuria.

The image bears the original caption — A poppy field in Manchuria, natives extracting fluid from which opium is made — revealing a colonial vocabulary that reduces the photographed subjects to their productive function. My intervention focuses on one of the two images of the stereograph: the children’s bodies gradually shift into negative, as if dissolving into air, vapor, or smoke. This transformation questions the way an archive can simultaneously preserve a presence and produce its erasure.

Around the image, seven ceramic forms evoke plant organs, conduits, or forms of breath. They extend the archive into space, giving it a material body situated between protection, circulation, and remembrance.

Developed within the framework of the Prix Flair, Waft entered the collection of the Fonds d’art contemporain – Paris Collections in 2026.

L’inscription originale de l’image — A poppy field in Manchuria, natives extracting fluid from which opium is made — révèle un vocabulaire colonial qui réduit les personnes photographiées à leur fonction productive.

图像原有的文字说明——A poppy field in Manchuria, natives extracting fluid from which opium is made——显现出一种殖民语汇,它将被摄者简化为生产功能中的主体。
